There are only two months of the first decade of the 21st century left.
Time passes. So it is appropriate that Saturn, master of time and
destiny, has just moved on into the constellation of Scorpio for the
next 30 months, very much marking the changing of the guard celestially.
And it is Halloween, a survival from the Celtic calender when the old
year was viewed as coming to an end. This in turn was taken over by the
Christian church with its feast of all souls, and the surviving
tradition from Celtic times that the souls of the dead were abroad on
the eve of All Hallows.
My closest approximation to this sense of the dead being abroad in the
night was in Germany shortly after the border came down between East and
West Germany.
I had driven to a town in the East and found myself stopped at a level
crossing waiting for a train to slowly trundle past. It was a strangely
eerie moment, a winking red light warning of a crossing, a shadowy train
coming out of the night and clattering past. Only then did I see a sign
mentioning where I was, Buchenwald.
The heinous crimes committed here some half a century before still
shrieked out for restorative justice, there were still angry victims
about searching for answers.
Saturn, regretfully, as well as ruling the material world and its rules
and necessary restrictions, also rules the tragedies of life, the great
crimes of history, of which the Holocaust is surely one.
I remember my Dutch/German friend and poet, Christian Konstadt, telling
me about a journey he took around Europe, visiting all those places
where there were once thriving Jewish communities, such as Amsterdam,
Prague and Warsaw. Now all eerily quiet and empty of their Jewish
inhabitants.
If you live in New York, Los Angeles or London, you are hardly aware of
just how complete the annihilation of the Jews was in mainland Europe,
indeed many fled from the persecution to the New World and provided the
creative impulse for the movie industry among many other areas of
activity.
But this is the side of Saturn, and ourselves, we are most reluctant to
face. The facts of life as they really are. And only when these are
acknowledged can we move on and learn how to overcome the limitations
that life on Earth places upon us.
There are three great Saturn-ruled cycles in life for most people. They
coincide with when the position of Saturn in the heavens returns to
where the great planet was at the time of our birth. Hence the name,
'the Saturn return'.
The first time this happens, around the age of 29, marks the entry into
our fully fledged adult role in life, and its accompanying increase in
power and responsibility as the freedoms of youth and dependence on
others for our survival are cast aside.
This first Saturn return can prove a tough time for some as there will
be increasingly hard lessons provided by Saturn on the need to move on
and to drop childish things. Resist as you might, Saturn will finally
force you to move on, as you must.
The next great Saturn return in a chart occurs when people reach the age
of 58-59, once again it is a reminder to prepare for an enormous change
and to drop what has become outworn and outmoded. The accumulated wisdom
from near six decades on earth needs to be put into practice in the
lifestyle and choices from then on.
Now as Saturn enters Libra we enter a new time phase for the world
itself, a new decade begins, a rebalancing of forces and the
relationship between nations begins, the recessionary pressures ease and
a rebalanced economy begins to take shape amid far reaching structural
changes.
